Matt Lauer concluded the segment by saying he was taking notes for conversations he needs to have with his kids this weekend. Yes,we need to keep talking to our young people!  It appears parental and educational talks are working since numbers are down for drinking, smoking, sexual activity and school fights. We also need to model proper behavior, too.  Often our actions do speak louder than words!  As adults, we need to stay on top of what’s trending with teens so we can continue to communicate, instruct, counsel and guide effectively.

Teaching young people is Biblical.  God instructs us to do so three times in Deuteronomy! (4:9-10, 6:4-9, 11:18-19) The Bible instructs us to teach our children when they are in our house, coming and going, when they lie down, and when they rise.  God, Himself, initiates this when He gathers the adults of Israel together so He can teach them, instructing the adults to pass on His teachings to their children and future generations. (Deuteronomy 4:9-10)  God is teaching them how to be Holy, and setting the example for us, as adults, as to how we should influence younger generations to be Holy, too.  FYI, being Holy isn’t just about following rules and being obedient to God.  It’s also about respect and preserving life.  Respect for God, others and self.

Today’s teens and tweens are full of promise for the future, but they need our leadership, guidance and help.  Let’s learn from these statistics and do what we can to teach and model Godly, safe behavior.

Deuteronomy 4:9-10 Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life.  Make them known to your children and your children’s children – how…the LORD said to me, Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on earth, and that they may teach their children so.

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul nad with all your might.  And thee words that I command you today shall be on your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.  You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.   (I think God would have like Post-It notes, don’t you?)

Deuteronomy 11:18-19  “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eye.  You shall teach to your children, talking of them when you are sitting your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when your lie down, and when your rise.  You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied…”

Psalm 34:11 Com, O children, listen to me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

Psalm 78:5-7 He established ad testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God…
