If you will fear the LORD and serve him and heed his voice and not rebel against the commandment of the LORD, adn if both you and th king who reigns over you will folllow the LORD your God, it will be well; but if you will not heed thevoice of hteLORD, but rebel against the commandment of the LORD, then the hand of the LORD will be against you and your king.

– 1 Samuel 12:14-15

I’ve been reading the verse above for several days since it’s the daily verse for my Bible study assignments.  How appropriate it is at this election time!

When I first read this passage I was impressed with the importance of having a godly ‘king’, because the verse says that “…if you and your king…will follow the LORD…it will be well…”   However, if you read entire verse more closely, this isn’t just a warning for our ‘kings’.   This is a warning for us and our ‘kings’.

We, the People, have a responsibility to not only seek godly ‘kings’, but to be godly ourselves!  We are called to serve the LORD, heed His voice, and follow His commandments.

We, the People, must do what we can to call for godly actions and decisions by ALL of our leaders.  We can’t just talk about what they should do or should have done.  We need to make our voices heard in respectful and righteous ways, and not put all the responsibilities on our leaders.  We need to take actions for ourselves and encourage those around us to do the same, teaching them when necessary about what the Bible says is right and wrong.

We are a country established by the People and for the People.  We must take responsibility as such.  As Christians, we need to take advantage of our freedoms to speak up and be heard, and do what it takes to work in proper process to get things done as God calls us to do.

Jesus made it very clear that we’re not to put money first in our lives.  So why are we putting money first for our nation? Moral issues need to be most important.  When morality declines, society declines.  Just as is true in our personal Christian lives, when our nation prospers morally, it will prosper financially.  God will see to that!  We need to focus on what’s right and wrong, and trust God to do the rest.

We need to live out loud as faithful people, not fearful people.

Dear Lord, Please don’t let us, Your Christian people, forget the issues that were important to us in this election.  And please don’t let us submit to leadership and laws that contradict our Christian beliefs.  Empower us, oh Lord, to do Your will for the sake of keeping this great nation righteous and pleasing to You.  Help us to help others who need to know You more and better understand how Your ways sometimes differ from the world’s ways.  And please continue to keep us in your mercy and grace, blessing our nation always.  In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
